Mark Fichtinger: Recent Work

Jun 5th - Jun 28th, 1992

The Clay Studio is pleased to announce "Recent Work" a solo exhibition featuring fellowship recipient Mark Fichtinger. This exhibit will stand in the Arcadia Gallery of the Clay Studio from June 5th through the 28th with the opening reception Friday, June 5th, 5-8pm. Gallery hours are Tuesday thru Friday 12-6 pm, Saturday & Sunday 12-5 pm.

Mark Fichtinger received his MFA from Tyler School of Art. This past year, he was awarded the nationally juried Clay Studio Fellowship which provides a year of free work space and a monthly stipend. Mark's most recent exhibitions include the city wide juried exhibition "Philadelphia Clay Regional" at the Painted Bride Art Center and the nationally juried exhibition "Personal Shrines and Icons" at The Clay Studio.

Built through a combination of handbuilding and press mold techniques, Mark incorporates non-clay materials into his oversized, ceramic heads. These non-clay materials function either as "substitute parts for the human anatomy, or as devices to place the head into a new context". Rich and rugged surfaces are an important part of the emotional impact of this work and Mark often produces these surfaces through the Raku and wood firing process.
