Fran Scott: Colored Rhythms

Apr 3rd - Apr 26th, 1992

The Clay Studio is pleased to announce "Colored Rhythms" a solo exhibition featuring colored porcelain by resident artist Fran Scott. Finalizing the 4 month "Clay in Philadelphia" celebration, this exhibit will stand in the Front Gallery of the Clay Studio from April 3rd through the 26th with the opening reception Friday, April 3, 5-8pm. Gallery hours are Tuesday thru Friday 12-6 pm, Saturday & Sunday 12-5 pm.

A long standing art educator in the Philadelphia community, Fran Scott taught for many years in the Philadelphia School District. Currently, she teaches at Philadelphia Community College and the Clay Studio. As a Studio Resident Artist, Fran has shown at both the Northwest Craft Center in Seattle, Washington and the Baltimore Clayworks. She has also participated in juried and invitational exhibitions throughout the Delaware Valley including the Baltimore Craft Fair.

Inspiration, for Fran, comes from the essential rhythmic designs of nature found in shells, leaves and grasses. Working with colored porcelain, she attempts "to translate very simple designs, such as stripes, checkerboards, and other symbols into something that is not a copy of nature but that is reminiscent of it." Her strong geometric designs also show the influence of her fascination with the symbolic designs of American Indian pottery. Her simple forms and subtlely colored surfaces hold elegant and unexpected rhythms and patterns.

This year the Clay Studio celebrates its seventeenth year of local and national service as a non-profit educational arts organization dedicated to promoting the ceramic arts and work of new clay artists through its gallery, school, studio space and lecture series.
