Porcelain

Mar 6th - Mar 28th, 1987

The Clay Studio presents "Porcelain", a solo exhibition by resident artist, Kathryn Narrow, March 6 thru 28. The opening reception is Sunday March 8th, from 2-5 PM. Gallery hours are Monday thru Friday 2 to 6 PM, Saturday 1 to 4 PM.

Since 1973, Kathryn Narrow has worked as a production potter, producing a stoneware line recognized for its consistency of style and quality. Over the past five years she has begun to produce one-of-a-kind, intricately-carved porcelain pieces that offer a much broader picture of Ms Narrow's artistic sensibility and impeccable craftsmanship. At a time when much of ceramic art is moving in a purely decorative, more abstract direction, Kathryn chooses to communicate through functional works; in her own words, "I am trying to convey my joy in using this material, most of which has to do with the tactile qualities and the ongoing involvement required for the whole process. What I hope is that the user of my piece, by the very nature of using, will feel some of this pleasure; will feel the lumps and swirls, the smoothness and sharpness, the jolts and rhythms.

Over the past 9 years Kathryn has been an integral part of The Clay Studio, both as an artist and administrator. She served as president of the resident artists three times during her tenure, and has filled in as Acting Executive Director twice when the Studio was thrust into transition. With this exhibition, Kathryn bids her farewell to the Studio, before moving onto her new quarters in South Philadelphia.
