Current Residents at The Clay Studio
Jan 20th - Mar 31st, 2024
Our current 12 resident artists display their works in a touching proclamation of The Clay Studio's present and future in the lives of each artist. Shown in partnership with the exhibition Founders and Foundations, visitors are invited to witness the rich history and evergrowing lineage of The Clay Studio's orginal founders and starting resident artist.
The Resident Artist program today is an outgrowth of the founding principal of The Clay Studio in 1974 - to serve as a springboard for artists as they launch the next phase of their careers. The twelve artists represented in Flow embody this concept in a variety of ways. Each has used their time in the community of peers to push their work forward and take the next steps in establishing their artistic careers.

Description:
The Clay Studio, for me, encapsulates a meaningful experience defined by community, collaborative studio work, and the urban environment. The studio environment among fellow artists is a valuable aspect, providing a supportive backdrop for creative exploration. In shared studio spaces, ideas converge, fostering a collaborative atmosphere that enhances artistic endeavors.
The city itself becomes a source of inspiration, influencing my work with its diverse cultural offerings and dynamic energy. The constant interplay between my art and the urban landscape shapes a narrative that contributes to my creative expression.
I find a space for personal artistic development within a collective framework. It's not just about individual growth but also about participating in a shared dialogue where creativity serves as a common language. This understated yet impactful journey allows me to navigate the intersections of community and city life, finding a balance that influences my artistic voice.

Description:
The Clay Studio gives me space to focus on making my art and growing my business knowing I have the resources I need. Partly these are physical, like my studio here or the glaze lab, and partly they are emotional, like the connections forged with everyone who comes out to work, learn, see art, or socialize. I am reminded that people believe in what I’m doing and want to help me. The extra support in the residency program creates an opportunity for me to really settle in and explore. I'm constantly inspired by the collections displayed throughout the building and feel moved by the vastness of ceramics and feeling that I am contributing to cumulative collective knowledge.

Description:
'Mercury Table' is the first sculptural outcome from the cross-dialogue between Jeanne Blissett Robertson and scientist Dr. Jon Hawkings at University of Pennsylvania. Hawkings and his team are researching mercury contamination of water systems due to ice-caps melting in the Arctic and grinding down bedrock, releasing trapped elements. Micro-organisms convert the released mercury into a highly toxic form called methylmercury which gets passed along the food chain and bioaccumulates. Jeanne has been interested to explore past scientific research involving mercury and the shifting narrative of it being a mythical substance, the elixir of life, to being considered highly toxic and dangerous.
